You’ve heard of Ozempic (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) — the injectable weight loss drugs that have dominated headlines for the past two years. Eli Lilly just announced results from five Phase 3 clinical trials for a new drug called retatrutide that could make both of them look modest by comparison.
Here’s the simple version of why this matters: Ozempic targets one hormone receptor (GLP-1). Mounjaro targets two (GLP-1 + GIP). Retatrutide targets three — GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon. That third target — glucagon — is the game-changer, because it doesn’t just suppress your appetite. It actively increases your body’s energy expenditure and promotes fat burning. The other two drugs mostly work by making you eat less. This one makes you burn more and eat less.
The latest Phase 3 results, announced July 23, 2026, showed that people with obesity and type 2 diabetes lost up to 20.8% of their body weight over 80 weeks. People with severe obesity and established cardiovascular disease lost up to 22.6%. In an earlier trial called TRIUMPH-1, people without diabetes lost up to 28.3% — numbers previously only seen with bariatric surgery.
What This Means for You
If you’ve struggled with weight loss and felt like existing medications don’t go far enough, retatrutide could represent the next leap. The weight loss numbers are roughly double what semaglutide alone achieves.
But there are real trade-offs. The side effects are more intense — higher rates of diarrhea, nausea, and discontinuation than tirzepatide. About 1 in 8 people on the highest dose stopped treatment because of side effects. This will likely mean retatrutide gets prescribed to people with the most weight to lose, rather than everyone.
Lilly plans to file for FDA approval in Q1 2027. If approved, it could be available by late 2027 or early 2028. That sounds far away, but in drug development terms, it’s fast — the clinical data package is already complete.
The Bottom Line: Retatrutide isn’t available yet. You can’t get it from your doctor or pharmacy right now. But if you’ve been waiting for something more powerful than what’s currently on the market, this is the one to watch. It could fundamentally change what “pharmacological weight loss” means — from “lose 15% of your body weight” to “lose 25%.”
