Research Context

Epithalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, also designated AEDG) is a four-amino-acid synthetic tetrapeptide developed at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology based on the amino acid composition of Epithalamin, a polypeptide complex extracted from bovine pineal gland tissue. The peptide was designed as a short-peptide mimetic of the parent extract and was first detected as a natural component of the pineal gland polypeptide complex in 2017. While originally investigated as a pineal gland bioregulator with effects on melatonin secretion and neuroendocrine function, subsequent research has examined Epithalon for effects on telomerase activation and telomere elongation in somatic cells, epigenetic regulation of gene expression via histone interaction, antioxidant defense enzyme activity, circadian rhythm normalization, and the relationship between telomere maintenance and replicative senescence.
